Injury Rehabilitation

Pre and Post-Operative Rehabilitation

The success of your recovery from surgery is not only dependant on the surgery itself but also your pre and post-operative rehabilitation.

Pre-operative rehabilitation is the stage leading into your surgery and is a vital component to anyone wanting to optimise their recovery post-op. The goal of pre-operative rehabilitation is to be well-conditioned to elevate and accelerate your post-operative rehabilitation.

Often your post-operative rehabilitation will begin as an inpatient with hospital staff. Following discharge post-operative rehabilitation is important component to your recovery, individualised and specific rehabilitation ensures you achieve the best possible outcome from your procedure and minimises the risk of complications.

Here at Enhance physiotherapy your rehabilitation will be individualised depending on the procedure performed and your personal rehabilitation goals – be it return to sport, work or to pain free everyday activities. Your rehabilitation experience at Enhance Physiotherapy will include but not limited to a combination of education, advice, manual therapies and exercise.

Dry Needling

Dry Needling is where a fine needle or acupuncture needle is inserted into the skin and muscle

Dry needling is a treatment whereby a sterile, single-use, fine filament acupuncture needle is inserted into the muscle to decrease pain and improve movement of the muscle fibres through the release of a myofascial trigger point or ‘knot’ in the muscle. This helps to decrease the contraction of the tight muscle fibres and increase blood flow, oxygenation, and nutrients to the muscle, thereby restoring the fibres’ ability to expand and contract with the rest of the muscle fibres.

Dry needling is a relatively pain-free modality, and you do not generally experience the ‘pricking’ sensation you normally get when having a blood test or donating blood. The reason is the extremely fine size of the needles. Given they are not hollow to transfer fluid/blood (hence the term ‘dry needling’), the thickest needle is only 0.3mm thick. Matched with our teams’ unrivalled skills in the application of the dry needle, pain is minimised. You may feel an occasional sensation or twitch in the muscles as the myofascial trigger point is stimulated.

Pain Management

Chronic / Persistent Pain

Chronic and persistent pain is characterised by pain and discomfort that lasts well beyond the expected time of recovery and is often more intense or may involve areas of the body not originally affected by injury.

While every case is different, typically pain following an injury lasting 6 months or more, or, longstanding pain that is triggered by stress, mood changes and the environment may be categorised as persistent or chronic pain.

There are a variety of research-backed treatments that the Physiotherapists at Enhance Physiotherapy can use to assess, manage and treat chronic and persistent pain. These therapists have completed further training to better help them identify and unpack the complex reasons behind prolonged pain and its triggers.
