Temporomandibular Joint Pain

TMJ Physio (Jaw)

TMJ Physiotherapy refers to the treatment of the temporomandibular joint. This is more commonly known as jaw pain.

TMJ disorders will affect 12% of people each year, with TMJ problems being more common in women and younger people.

Common issues with the TMJ include:

TMJ pain can often be caused by the joint itself or by the surrounding muscles and can be commonly brought on by stress or after dental procedures.

Our team are experienced in treating TMJ disorders. Your physiotherapist will conduct a thorough examination to determine the structure causing your pain and the causative factors contributing to your pain. Manual therapy will be provided and a self-management program will be developed to help you manage your jaw pain.

Physio for Neurological Conditions

Neurological Rehabilitation

Neurological injuries involve disorders with the brain and nervous system (spinal cord and nerves).

Physiotherapists at Enhance are highly-skilled in treating a range of neurological conditions, including common conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis. Your physiotherapist will conduct a thorough assessment and work closely with you to form an effective, individualised treatment plan to achieve your goals.

Enhance Physiotherapy Albury and Wagga clinics have an extensive rehabilitation gym including equipment to improve strength, aerobic fitness, mobility and power, which are often affected in neurological conditions. Enhance physiotherapists also have the knowledge to advise equipment modifications and devices to assist your mobility.

This allows our physiotherapists to implement a comprehensive rehabilitation program as part of your treatment plan.

Vestibular Physiotherapists

Vestibular Physiotherapy

Vestibular physiotherapists treat patients with dizziness and balance problems.

The vestibular system, a tiny apparatus within the inner ear is often the source of these symptoms and can be treated with a targeted exercise-based approach by a suitable qualified therapist.

Common conditions we treat include:

All our physiotherapists are trained in vestibular rehabilitation with our physiotherapist, Chris Oats, having undertaken extensive post-graduate training by world class leaders in Vestibular rehabilitation. We are proud to offer the most up to date evidence-based assessment and management with the latest cutting-edge equipment.

Aquatic Physiotherapy

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is water-based Physiotherapy that involves specific exercises being completed in a heated pool.

Being in the water makes the body buoyant and relieves pressure on your joints by decreasing the weight placed through them. The deeper the water, the less pressure in your joints. There is also a therapeutic benefit from the warmth and pressure of the water on the body.

Hydrotherapy has been proven to be a beneficial rehabilitation option for conditions such as:

Enhance Physiotherapy runs small group classes at a heated, indoor pool at varying times throughout the week. You will need to have an individual assessment with one of our experienced physiotherapists to identify your problems and to develop an individualised hydrotherapy program prior to joining one of our small group classes.

To find out more information on class times and to organise an individual assessment please give our clinic a call.

Running Injuries

Running Assessments

Running related injuries are a common complaint that requires a particular management approach.

We believe in tailoring our assessment and treatment to cater towards your needs which is why we’ve developed an assessment protocol to address these injuries. Running is a learned skill and requires particular attention to an individual’s loading program and movement patterns. Running assessments can be suitable for any runner of any skill level from the casual runner to ultramarathoner.

The primary aim is to guide clients through their injury while striving towards their goals. We are offering a 1-hour initial consultation in order to develop a specific management plan for each client. Follow up appointments will be 30 minutes.

The initial consultation will also include:

It is recommended that clients wear comfortable activewear and running shoes for the running assessment. If you wear orthotics, then please bring them as well.

Walking or Motion Analysis

Gait Assessments

Our Physiotherapists assess your gait pattern in real time, as well as slow motion analysis. This helps to identify any insufficiencies which could be leading to an injury.

This assessment helps us to guide a treatment plan for you to be walking the most optimal for your body, and without pain.  Our gait assessments pick up a wide range of conditions including:

Podiatry

Casting / Splint / Orthotics

Enhance Physiotherapy offers fibreglass casts for fracture immobilisation.

Fibreglass casts are a lot lighter and more durable than plaster casts.  Using ‘delta dry’ we are able to make our casts completely waterproof which makes showering with a cast a lot easier!

We also fabricate thermoplastic splints for a variety of finger and hand pathologies.  These splints are heated and moulded to immobilise the required joints in a specific position for healing.  We have a variety of material from lightweight sporting splints, to heavy duty immobilisation material.

Enhance also has a range of semi-rigid, heat mouldable orthotics to assist with foot posture.  The orthotics are used to treat or prevent a variety of conditions including:

SPECIALISED PHYSIOTHERAPY FAQs

Wear something comfortable and that allows your area of concern to be easily accessible (eg shorts for knee injury, singlet for shoulder, wear runnings if sporting injury etc). Having a good understanding of when and how your injury or condition happened and what things aggravate or ease your symptoms will help your physiotherapist diagnose your issue more quickly.

Your physiotherapist will identify what may be contributing to causing your TMJ pain or restriction. They will then perform a physical assessment to identify which muscles or joint is contributing to your problem, this guides them in their treatment of your jaw during the session and assists them in formulating exercises and a plan to self-manage your symptoms at home.

Self-massage, Self-mobilisation and stress management are the most common forms of exercises for TMJ.

Depending on your condition and the setting (individual vs group) your hydrotherapy session will usually be either 30 or 60 minutes in duration.
