STRENGTH PROGRAMS
There are many misconceptions that strength training is just for elite athletes.
Here at Enhance Physiotherapy we provide strength programs to people from all walks of life who are looking to improve their strength.
Whether you are just looking to stay fit, are a recreational sportsperson or an elite athlete, you can benefit from strength training. During a strength assessment your movement and function will be assessed to aid us in developing a program suited to you. The overall aim is to improve your strength and function, to reduce pain symptoms and improve your overall quality of life.
More specifically strength training can assist in developing your speed, agility, power and flexibility specific to your sport, activity or in everyday life. It is well known that strength training can also aid in decreasing your risk of developing any injuries by improving your overall muscular strength.
GLA:D Program
The goals of the GLA:D program are to increase strength, control and endurance for tasks in the affected joints.
Stemming from almost 2 decades of research, the Good Living with Arthritis: Denmark (GLA:D) program is an internationally acclaimed program that delivers the most up-to-date and evidence-based treatment and management of hip and knee osteoarthritis. The GLA:D program was first designed and delivered in Denmark, where it is now a primary program to be undertaken prior to investigating surgical options for joint replacements.
The foundations of the GLA:D program are based on education, exercise and weight control. This was also reflected by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2018, when they updated their arthritis management guidelines to include education, exercise and weight control as the primary methods of managing osteoarthritis.
The goals of the program are to increase strength, control and endurance for tasks in the affected joints. This often leads to increased functional ability and decreased pain levels. This is achieved through educating you about how arthritis affects your body and providing a 6-week exercise physiotherapy program that includes twice weekly gym sessions tailored to your current functional capacity. We will also advise you on potential programs that are available for weight loss, which could be fully funded by your private health insurance.
FITNESS PROGRAMS
There is often a misconception that you only need to see a physiotherapist when you have an injury. However, this is not the case, our exercise physiotherapy fitness programs can be tailored to any individual with any goal.
At Enhance Physiotherapy we offer both physiotherapy and exercise physiology (see out exercise physiology tab for more info!) services. Our physiotherapy and exercise physiology staff are all trained to provide fitness programs to assist you in achieving your goals.
Alongside specialising in exercise prescription and rehabilitation, our staff are also experts in motivating you to be active and assisting you with managing any coexisting injuries or conditions you may have.
Our team at Enhance Physiotherapy are dedicated to working with you as an individual to determine what may be stopping you from keeping active and developing an individualised program that can make achieving your fitness goals easier.
How can we help you
At Enhance Physiotherapy we understand that different conditions and injuries require different methods to help resolve them. For this reason, we offer additional specialty physiotherapy services to help with certain conditions.
EXERCISE PHYSIOTHERAPY FAQs
All exercise programs delivered by your physiotherapist will be individually tailored to your injury and rehab needs. This ensures they are safe and at a level you can perform with confidence.
The main difference is that physiotherapist’s are skilled in the assessment and diagnosis of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. They can also provide hands on treatment to help with your pain/symptoms. These are 2 key aspects that Exercise Physiologist are not trained to do. Both physiotherapists and exercise physiologist are skilled in exercise prescription. Most commonly physiotherapist’s treat acute injuries while exercise physiologists are often utilised to treat more chronic conditions such as diabetes.
The GLA:D Program is an excellent evidence based program which has been shown to reduce pain and reliance on pain medications for people suffering from Hip or Knee Osteoarthritis.
